Your DOSHA–mind-body personality–is deeply layered and one-of-a-kind. In the world of Ayurveda, we truly are snowflakes–living, operating and expressing our life-essence in our own unique way.
Understanding your mind-body through the lens of Ayurveda begins with two steps. The first step is learning what you were born as–your unique nature–and is known as your PRAKRUTI. Your nature formula is comprised of a unique combination of the Five Master Elements (Mahabhutas) that make up your mind-body physiology. These elements are space, air, fire, water, and earth and the individual amounts of these five elements vary within each of us. Some of us have a predominance of space and air while others may have more fire, water or earth. These elemental combinations are broken down into three mind body principles or personalities known as the DOSHAS–Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The second step is discovering which of these five elements have fallen out of balance and learning the appropriate wisdom tools to get you back into your natural Prakruti flow. Imbalance is caused by many things: stress, diet, detached mind-body awareness, life changes, challenging circumstances, seasonal transitions, etc. This is known as your VIKRUTI and is a snapshot of your current state–influenced by your life experiences and choices. Understanding the dynamics of your Vikruti is the KEY to resetting your rhythm and getting your groove back–mentally, emotionally, and physically. An example of this would be how a current overabundance of the FIRE element may cause excessive heat in your life–internally (heartburn or ulcers) and externally (heated outward expression). Your Vikruti is the pivotal catalyst that guides you back into balance, while clearly defining the mind-body obstacles that are keeping you from feeling, expressing and living your life to the fullest.
