Ashwagandha–also known as Withania Somnifera or Winter Cherry–is among the most important herbs in Ayurveda. The Sanskrit translation is “the smell of a horse”, implying the strength of a stallion. It is known for its rejuvenative benefits and has been referred to as “Indian Ginseng”.
Often classified as an adaptogen, it fights against the effects that stress can have on the body. It is a strong antioxidant in it’s ability to fight free radical damage and a powerful immunity booster by its strong capability to protect immune cells that may have been subjected to chemicals that inhibit healthy function. Oh…and an aphrodisiac for both men & women…ohlala.
Known to calm mental turbulence, studies have also shown that it acts on acetylcholine receptors, which are known to be important in the processing of memory, logical thinking, problem solving, and reaction time.
The many harmonizing benefits that it has on the mind-body physiology, make it a trusty “go-to” for anyone suffering from stress, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and a general sense of ungroundedness–perfect for individuals with a predominance of Vata and especially helpful during our current “swirly” Vata Season.
VATA–grounding, stimulates concentration & memory, helps with insomnia
PITTA–may cause slight aggravation due to it being mildly heating (but don’t dismiss before giving it a fair shot!)
KAPHA–helps lighten the “weight” of fatigue and softens the edges (mood enhancement)

PLEASE HONOR HERBS AND BE SMART…
Use the gifts of Nature’s herbs appropriately, respectfully and responsibly.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT. Always consult your health practitioner before taking Ashwagandha or any other herbal tonic. Large doses of Ashwagandha may cause mild digestive upset and should always be used CAUTIOUSLY. It is NOT RECOMMENDED for people with peptic ulcer disease or any other digestive health challenges.
Be well. Live free. Love hard. Rock on!
